Lingvo leo browser app. Review of LinguaLeo - an online service for learning English

Probably, it will not be news to anyone that the English language is gaining more and more importance in our time. And not only English. The closer we are to the world, to other countries, the more often it becomes necessary to translate some texts, or words from English into our native language, and vice versa.

Previously, this could only be done with a dictionary in hand, or by learning a foreign language. With a dictionary, of course, it's a little tedious to translate, but there was no other choice.

Now there is an alternative. With the advent of the computer, translation programs first appeared, and now, with the advent and spread of the Internet, online services have appeared that are ready to provide us with translation services.

So after all, which one to choose? If you need to translate one word, or a small fragment from English, then you will hardly find a better application from Lingua Leo.

Application from Lingua Leo

I already told you about it in the article. It is an online service for learning English. There you can find a huge amount of educational material: audio, video, texts, various games, tasks. Learning English there is very interesting and comfortable, everything is done in a playful way. On this service, you can completely learn English: learn to read, understand English, and talk with native speakers.

But besides this, the service offers an application for browsers, and a mobile application, which will help us with translation.

Let's deal with application for browsers .

First you need register on the service ... After logging into your account, you will see in the upper right corner dropdown triangle ... Hover over it with the mouse, then hover over the item Yet , and after that click on the item Browser app .

And you get to the page of the application from Lingua Leo, which is called LeoTranslator ... Then you click on the button Install a free extension for your browser , which is now open, and if you need an application for another browser, then select it by clicking on one of the links below.

What does this extension do? It's very simple: now you are on any site you can double click on any English word - and you will be shown various options for its translation in the window that appears.

You can also translate the whole phrase ... To do this, select the phrase, right-click on it, and select the item Add to dictionary ... And the translation will appear in front of you.

And then on the Lingua Leo website you can further work on this phrase: the service will remember this phrase and add it to the training materials. You can add not only phrases, but also individual words to the dictionary for further study.

After installation, the extension icon appears in the upper right corner of the browser. By clicking on it, you can immediately go to the Lingua Leo website.

If you click on the icon right mouse button , then a list of actions that you can do with this application will appear.

You can go to the application settings by clicking on the item Settings ... By default, the application translates English words on websites when you double click on them. But if this bothers you in some way, you can configure the translation - make it turn on by double-clicking with the key pressed Ctrl or Alt ... You can also make an automatic reading of the translated word. There is also a tab with information on how to use the application.

By right-clicking on the application icon, you can also delete it, hide the icon, or go to the browser settings, and deal with all its extensions.

More detailed information can be found in the sections "All courses" and "Usefulness", which can be accessed through the top menu of the site. In these sections, the articles are grouped by topic into blocks containing the most detailed (as far as possible) information on various topics.

You can also subscribe to the blog, and learn about all new articles.
It does not take much time. Just click the link below:

Is an educational site for self-study of English. The methodology is based on, according to the developers, “smart” mastering of live content from native speakers. Lingvaleo is suitable for different levels, useful for both beginners and those who already know the language quite well. With the help of this service, you can practice according to an individual plan (lead by the hand) or simply study different materials (free swimming), of which there are a lot in Lingvaleo.

(the last update of the review - 06/26/2018)

Study materials: texts, audio and video

If you are looking for something to read, listen to or watch (including with subtitles) in English, then Lingvaleo is an easy way to find material of the desired level of difficulty without long digging in Google. Just go to "Materials" and choose what you like best.

"Materials" is a library of the same "live content", that is, audio recordings, songs, videos, texts in English. The content is added by users themselves, it is systematized by difficulty levels and topics.

Leo the Lion Cub, Meatballs and XP Points

Disassemble in the service helps lion cub Leo... He explains where to start and how everything works here. The lion cub needs to be “fed” by earning experience points - they are given for completing any tasks on the site. Points are needed to remove some of the restrictions. For example, part of the exercises for memorizing words opens after pumping to a certain level.

Also the site has meatballs - this is a game "currency" that is given for activity on the site - registration, exercises, inviting friends, etc. Meatballs are needed to save the words found in tasks in a personal piggy bank. One meatball = one stored word.

Of course, you can always pay Premium account (formerly called "Gold Status") and access paid services without bothering with meatballs. Personally, I did just that. I often read English-language sites, and using the LeoTranslator plugin it is convenient to use an unlimited dictionary (see below).

However, many features of the service are free to use.

An individual approach to the student - how is it implemented

It is convenient to study according to the plan when you don't know where to start.

As soon as you register on the site, you will be asked to take a test on your knowledge of words and grammar, and then fill out a questionnaire indicating gender, age, personal interests. Based on the test results, the program will find out what level of language you have, according to the questionnaire - what materials (text, audio, video) to offer you. Together, these data help the program compose individual lesson planpersonalized for you.

In the process of training, your progress will be evaluated, and based on statistics, the plan will again be tailored to you.

The red lion cub Leo will help you along the way, especially at the beginning. He will literally lead by the hand, explaining where to press and what to do.

The learning process according to an individual plan looks like this:

  1. You have registered on the site.
  2. Passed a word and grammar test (so Leo could understand who he was dealing with).
  3. Indicated interests - on their basis, texts and videos will be selected.
  4. After these procedures, you get to the section "Tasks", which indicates what exactly needs to be done.
  5. As you progress through assignment after assignment, you will develop your language skills and get closer to your intended goal.

“Assignments” are your individual lesson plan

“Jobs” is not a rigid route that cannot be turned off. If the proposed task does not like or is not interesting (too easy), you can refuse it. The program is simple tells you where to start and what to do next... You, of course, are free to ignore these tips and embark on a free journey.

I have known Lingualeo for a long time and there were no recommendations there before. After registering, you were simply sent to the library of materials - do what you want! But there are so many materials that it is just that your eyes run up. Where to start? This often frightened users off. Now there is no such problem. Registered - here you are, please, the algorithm of actions. Just do it and that's it.

What materials does LinguaLeo offer

Content in Materials is divided into text, audio and video.

In reading The most interesting thing is that any word can be selected, translated and voiced using the built-in dictionary, and then added to your personal dictionary.

It is very convenient. When you read a regular paper book, the need to frequently look into the dictionary is annoying and distracting from reading. And if you try to write out unfamiliar words in a notebook so that you can learn it later, it slows down reading even more and makes it less interesting.

With Lingvaleo, you can read without the distraction of looking up the dictionary. Did you come across an unfamiliar word? Hover the mouse over and see the translation - it takes literally a second. Want to learn this word later? Submit it to the dictionary. After reading, learn the added words with the help of a special training program (section "Training").

Words from audio and video, can also be sent for study to the dictionary if the material is accompanied by subtitles. Lingvaleo has smart subtitles. At any time, click on an unfamiliar word, the entry will immediately pause, a dictionary hint will pop up, and the word will go to your learning dictionary.

Section "Trainings" - learning words in different modes

So, we watched the video, read a short story, and we have accumulated, say, 20 words. How do you teach them? We go to the section "Trainings" and teach! Workouts are programs for memorizing added words. There are 7 free study modes in total, plus 8 modes in Premium (paid subscription). To open some free modes, you need to pump up to a certain level by completing tasks.

Most of the training focuses on memorizing words. Recreating History, Fill the Gaps will improve your reading skills, and Collect Sentences will improve your listening comprehension.

There are 15 types of workouts on the site

Free modes:

1. Word-translation - the traditional "multiple choice", a word is given in English and several answer options to it - choose the right one. In my opinion, multiple choice is only suitable for picking up a word on the memory hook, not to learn it.

2. Translation-word - the same, but the words are given in Russian, you need to choose an English translation.

"Word-translation" mode, note that the word is given a context (the sentence from which I took the word) and a picture

3. Savannah - a game in which English words fall from the sky, and you need to click on the correct Russian word. You can make mistakes, but the number of lives is limited.

4. Listening - English words are dictated to you, you need to type them by ear (in English).

5. Word constructor - the word, parsed into cubes with letters, must be put back together. Useful for spelling.

6. Vocabulary cards - regular double-sided cards (flashcards). You are shown an English word, you need to click “Know” or “Don't know”. The mode opens at level 10.

7. Phrase constructor - a phrase in Russian is given, you need to collect an English translation from several words. The mode opens at the 8th level.

Eight modes in Premium:

1. Brainstorm -combined mode, first you will be shown a few words so that you can select which ones should be learned and which ones should be translated into “learned”. Then the selected words will be run first in the “Word-translation” mode, then in the “Word constructor.

2. Repetition - a quick way to repeat words. An English word is given, you need to choose one of two options in 3 seconds.

Repeat mode is a quick way to repeat saved words

3. Leo Sprint - speed training. Within a minute you need to guess whether the correct translation is offered to an English word or not.

4. Crossword - a crossword puzzle is compiled from the words of your dictionary, which you need to solve. A very difficult task. There are no clues.

5. Audio call -listen to the English word and choose one of five answer options.

6. Collect suggestions - training will help you better learn to understand by ear. You need to listen to the sentence and collect it from the suggested words.

7. Rebuild history - first we read the text in a limited time, then the sentences are mixed, the task is to reassemble the text.

8. Add the blanks - all spaces have been removed from the text and it will turn into a one-large sentence. You need to break it down into words.

"Trainings" are implemented in an interesting and varied way, they are quite enough for repetition and memorization of the words found in the materials.

LeoTranslator - p lagin LinguaLeo for the browser

A great find for developers - a special extension (plugin) for the browser LeoTranslator, with which you can add words to your dictionary from any site.

How it works.

  • Install the extension to your browser (unfortunately only Chrome),
  • On any website, double-click on the desired word to see its translation,
or highlight a word, right-click and select "Add to Dictionary"
  • If you select multiple words, right-click and select Add to Dictionary, the entire expression will be added.

This plugin is a handy tool even for those who speak English very well. With its help, you can read any text in the browser (for example, something for work) and translate unfamiliar words on the fly, adding them right there to the Lingvaleo dictionary.

For more information about using this plugin, I wrote in the article about.

Sections “ Grammar "and" Courses "

Obviously, Lingvaleo is trying to offer the user "turnkey English" so that the language can be learned without leaving the site. Full training would be unthinkable without grammar.

There are two sections for this: "Grammar" and "Courses".

"Grammar" Is a grammar trainer plus a reference book. Pick a topic and make short phrases from words. Some tasks are only available with a Premium subscription.

By clicking on “Show Rule”, you will see a quick help with examples

By paying for Premium, you will have full access to grammar workouts in this section, plus:

  • Full access to workouts (brainstorm, crossword puzzle, etc.);
  • Unlimited vocabulary - no meatballs will be charged for added words;
  • An added bonus in the form of an IELTS trainer.
  • Some “Courses” are unlocked.

"Courses" - this is the paid part of Lingvaleo. These are online courses with theory, explanations, exercises for different skills, some courses include classes with a tutor via Skype. Courses are offered on a wide variety of topics for different levels. There are both classes for beginners and quite serious tasks like preparing for the exam.

- there are native (and non-native) teachers there👅 for all occasions and for any pocket😄 I recommend this site, because I myself went through more than 80 lessons with teachers I found there - and I advise you to try it!

In addition to translation, LinguaLeo English Translator displays transcriptions of words and illustrations for them. The extension can read the original text using a speech synthesizer. It works best with single words or phrases, showing multiple translation options. But he also knows how to translate not too voluminous fragments of text.

This translator is part of the LinguaLeo online service that helps you learn English vocabulary. Therefore, LinguaLeo English Translator has one significant advantage. You can save the selected words and phrases so that you can later memorize them using vocabulary cards and special exercises on the website or in the service applications. On the other hand, the extension only translates from English.

To see the window with the result, you can select the text and call LinguaLeo English Translator through the context menu. But if you need to translate one word, just double-click on it with the left mouse button. The extension also supports calling translation using hotkeys.

If you're not in the know, Google Translate also has a Chrome extension. It supports many languages and does a good job with both single words, showing multiple translation options, and long texts.

Google Translate automatically detects the source language (although not as accurately as we would like). With the built-in speech synthesizer, you can listen to the approximate pronunciation of words.

Depending on the settings, the extension displays the translation immediately after one of the user actions: selecting text, clicking on the corresponding button on the toolbar, or clicking on the icon that appears next to the selected text.

Unlike other translators, the extension does not interpret phrases verbatim using algorithms. Instead, it searches the Web for human-made ready-made translations relevant to the query, and returns them as results. And since no algorithm understands context as well as a human, Reverso Context often beats the competition when it comes to complex speech patterns.

The extension translates words and short phrases in a pop-up window. But if you select a lot of words, then the application will redirect you to a separate site, where it will translate them in a regular online translator and without regard to context. Reverso Context supports over 12 languages, including English and Russian, and is able to detect the original language automatically.

You can open the window with the translation of the selected word or phrase through the context menu. The Reverso Context will then display the results along with examples of usage. The extension can read speech, stores the translation history and includes a dictionary where you can save your favorite results to view them in applications or on the website

ImTranslator combines several translators: Google, Bing and native. You can switch between them using three tabs that are displayed in a pop-up window. Thus, the user receives three different translations of the selected text at once.

ImTranslator recognizes and detects the original language automatically. The extension can read speech, stores the history of the results and translates both single words and phrases, and long fragments of text.

You can open a window with the translation of the desired words using hot keys (having previously assigned them in the settings) or the button that appears after selecting a fragment. To translate one word, just double-click on it.
